MTP® /MPO Breakouts

Overview

MTP®/MPO breakouts are optical fiber assemblies that are used to split a multi - fiber MTP® or MPO connection into multiple individual fiber connections. They serve as an interface between high - density multi - fiber links and single - fiber or smaller - group fiber applications. In essence, a breakout takes a bundle of fibers terminated in an MTP®/MPO connector at one end and distributes them into separate fibers or smaller fiber groups at the other end.

At one end of the breakout, there is an MTP® (Multi - Touch Push - On) or MPO (Multi - Fiber Push - On) connector. This connector is designed to mate with other MTP®/MPO connectors in a high - density fiber optic system. It can house a large number of optical fibers, typically in configurations like 12 - fiber, 24 - fiber, or more, depending on the specific requirements. At the other end of the breakout, there are multiple individual connectors or smaller - group connectors. These can be various types of multi - fiber connectors with a smaller number of fibers (e.g., 4 - fiber, 8 - fiber). The output connectors are used to interface with different devices or components that require individual or smaller - group fiber connections.

In data centers, MTP®/MPO breakouts are commonly used to connect high - density fiber optic backbones to individual servers, storage devices, or network interface cards. For example, a 24 - fiber MTP® trunk in the data center can be connected to a breakout, which then splits the fibers into individual LC connectors that can be plugged into servers. This allows for efficient utilization of the high - density cabling infrastructure while providing the flexibility to connect individual devices.
